Why carbon and quartz?
Here is the secret sauce: the carbon heating element inside a high-purity quartz tube. Most people are used to metal coils, but carbon is different. The quartz envelope is there to keep the filament from oxidizing and to handle the shock of being turned on and off rapidly. One big warning, though.Quartz hates skin oils. If you touch the glass while installing it, the oil from your fingers creates a tiny stress point. Once the lamp hits full temperature, that spot can cause the whole tube to crack. It’s a pain, but just wipe the tube down with some alcohol before you wire it up. Your future self will thank you.
Putting them to work
You’ll see these all over the place—PET bottle blowing, plastic welding, or drying lines. Because they use carbon, they ramp up way faster than those old-school ceramic heaters. They’re basically a “drop-in” replacement for most standard IR arrays, so swapping them out during maintenance is a breeze. The only thing? Carbon filaments put out a lot of concentrated heat.
