
Let’s Talk Pultruded Carbon Fiber Tubes
If you’ve ever held a pultruded carbon fiber tube, you know it feels different. It’s that strange, satisfying mix of feeling lightweight—almost like a toy—but being stubbornly rigid. We make these by pulling resin-soaked fibers through a heated die. Think of it like pulling a long, continuous strand of pasta, but instead of dough, we’re locking carbon fibers in a perfectly straight line. Because those fibers all run the same way, you get a tube that is incredibly stiff along its length. Why does that matter for your build? Well, if you’re designing a load-bearing spar or a precision shaft, the last thing you want is “flex.” You want it to stay put. Since the fibers are continuous, you don’t have to worry about those annoying weak spots you usually find in chopped-fiber composites. It’s just one long, strong line of support. And the weight… man, the weight is the best part. If you’re used to working with 6061 aluminum or 304 stainless steel, switching to carbon fiber feels like a cheat code. You can usually shave 40% to 60% off the weight of your assembly. You get to keep the same size and the same strength, but your project suddenly feels airy and effortless to move. Plus, these tubes don’t really care about the weather. They don’t grow or shrink when the temperature swings, which is a lifesaver if you’re building optical benches or aerospace tools where a fraction of a millimeter is the difference between “works” and “broken.” But here’s the catch. Pultrusion is all about strength in one direction. It’s a beast when it comes to bending or compression along the axis. But if you start applying heavy pressure from the side—like trying to crush the tube or pumping it full of high-pressure fluid—the resin can only do so much. Without extra support, a standard pultruded tube might just split. If your project involves that kind of radial pressure, don’t sweat it. Just let us know, and we can add a braided overwrap. It basically wraps the tube in a protective “sleeve” to handle those side-loads, giving you the best of both worlds.
