
The Lowdown on Carbon Fiber Quartz IR Tubes
We’ve spent a lot of time tinkering with carbon fiber filaments tucked inside high-purity quartz. The goal? Getting infrared radiation exactly where it needs to go. If you’re used to old-school tungsten coils, this is a different beast. These filaments don’t need to get nearly as hot to work, but they pump out way more medium-to-long wave IR. In plain English: the heat actually sinks deeper into plastics and organic materials instead of just scorching the surface. Getting the power right Here’s the thing about performance: it all comes down to the wattage-to-length ratio. We spend a lot of time balancing that heat flux so you get the power you need without frying the filament. If you’re doing PET blowing or industrial curing, you want those high-wattage setups for a fast ramp-up. Just be careful with your power supply. If you shove too many amps through a short tube, you’re basically asking for the filament to burn out early. Match your voltage, and you’re golden. How they’re built The quartz shell does the heavy lifting here. It keeps the carbon from oxidizing and lets the IR energy slide right through without losing steam. Depending on what you’re working with, we can add different coatings to tweak the emission peak or keep the glass from getting gunked up by contaminants. We use standard R7s or Sk15 bases, so you can usually just pop these into your existing heater banks. They fit tight, which means you don’t have to worry about annoying arc-overs at the terminals. Real-world tips and trade-offs These tubes are absolute workhorses for high-speed drying and forming. Because carbon reacts faster than metal, you get a much tighter grip on your thermal profile. It feels more responsive. But, a word of caution: quartz is fragile. If your machine frame vibrates or you clamp the tubes too hard, they’ll crack. It’s a headache you want to avoid. And one last tip—keep your reflectors clean. A dusty reflector kills your heat gain. When that happens, the tube has to run hotter to make up for the loss, which just wears the whole thing out faster. Keep them shiny, and your gear will last.
