
Getting Your Paint to Cure Right with Carbon Fiber IR
Let’s talk about curing. If you’re still relying on old-school quartz heaters, you’re probably spending way too much time—and money—waiting for things to dry. Carbon fiber IR lamps change the math. Instead of just heating the air, these lamps throw intense, short-wave heat exactly where it needs to go. The nitty-gritty on power When we build these, we focus on how much power hits every centimeter of your part. The goal is to “flash-dry” the surface. This means you aren’t wasting energy heating up the entire metal frame or substrate just to dry a thin layer of paint. But you’ve got to get the voltage right. Whether you’re running 220V or 380V, make sure it matches your control panel. If it doesn’t, you’ll get voltage drops, and that’s how you end up with splotchy, uneven curing. Also, watch your conveyor speed. If the lamp is too powerful for how fast your parts are moving, you’ll scorch the topcoat. Nobody wants that. What’s under the hood? Carbon fiber can take a lot more heat than tungsten. We wrap that filament in a high-purity quartz tube to keep everything airtight and stop the filament from oxidizing. We also keep things simple with the hardware. Most of our lamps use R7s or SK15 connectors. Why? Because they’re basically plug-and-play. If a tube burns out, you just swap it in. You don’t have to tear down your entire rack or spend half a shift cursing at a jig. Making it work on your line Here is the best part: short-wave IR actually penetrates the paint. It starts the curing process from the inside out. This stops “skinning”—that annoying problem where the top looks dry but the base is still wet and gooey. The trick is all in the distance. If the lamp is too close, you’ll get hot spots. Too far, and your cycle times start creeping up. One last tip: these lamps heat up almost instantly, which is great for efficiency. But remember, quartz is fragile. If your shop floor is a high-traffic area with a lot of vibration or things flying around, put some protective shields over them. It’s a lot easier to install a shield than it is to clean up shattered glass.
