
Stop Wasting Floor Space on Your Brake Pad Ovens
Most shops still use convection ovens, which basically just heat up the air and hope it eventually reaches the coating. It’s slow. It takes forever. And it means you end up with these massive, sprawling tunnels taking up half your factory floor. We do things differently with shortwave IR. Instead of heating the air, IR goes straight for the coating. It hits the substrate and the film at the same time. It’s fast. Really fast. Why your tunnels can finally shrink Since shortwave IR operates at a higher frequency, those organic binders in your coating soak up the energy almost instantly. You aren’t sitting around waiting for the air to warm up. Because of that, you can usually chop 40% to 60% off your tunnel length. That’s a huge amount of real estate you get back. Plus, you can push way more units through per hour without having to build a new wing on your factory. Getting the heat just right To make this work, we use high-wattage quartz lamps. They put concentrated energy exactly where it needs to be. But here’s the catch: you have to be careful. If you overshoot the temp, you’ll scorch the resin or end up with uneven shrinkage. It’s a delicate balance. That’s why we stick with PID controllers and pyrometers. It keeps your surface temperature within a tight 5°C window so you don’t ruin your parts. The trade-off Nothing is perfect. These high-density IR arrays put out a ton of heat. While your coating dries in a flash, your oven housing is going to feel the burn. You can’t skimp on the build here. You’ll need heavy-duty insulation and some active cooling for the lamp reflectors, otherwise, your chassis is going to warp. Making the switch If you’re moving from gas-fired convection to IR, it’s usually a pretty straightforward swap for the heating section. You wire it to a dedicated power rail, dial in your dwell time, and suddenly your footprint is smaller. The best part? It moves the bottleneck away from the drying stage and puts it back on the coating application—which is exactly where you want it.
