
Stop Letting Your Ovens Eat Your Floor Space
Let’s be honest: traditional convection ovens are a pain. They spend way too much time just heating up the air, and then you have to wait for that air to actually soak into the coating. It’s slow, it’s clunky, and it wastes time. We do things differently with short-wave infrared (IR) emitters. Instead of messing around with the air, IR radiation hits the coating directly. You aren’t waiting for the room to get warm; you’re curing the product the second it hits the line.
Why your tunnel can be way shorter
Most shops I visit have these massive tunnel ovens that take up half the factory floor. It’s a nightmare for layout. By switching to high-density IR lamps, we can seriously shrink that tunnel without slowing down your output. These lamps pack a punch, triggering the chemical cross-linking much faster. You get the exact same cure, but you don’t need nearly as much runway to get there.
The catch (and how to handle it)
Now, here’s the thing. If you cram more wattage into a smaller space to speed things up, your electrical setup is going to feel the heat. You can’t just slap in a high-power IR array and call it a day. Your cooling fans and ventilation need to be up to the task. If the lamp housings overheat, you’ll burn out your reflectors and kill your lamps way too soon. To keep things from spiraling, we use PID controllers. They keep the temperature steady so you don’t accidentally overshoot.
Making it work on the floor
If you’re looking to swap out a gas-fired oven, an IR tunnel usually fits right into the heating section without a huge headache. The real trick is “zoning.” You can set up your IR banks to create a temperature curve. Start with lower heat at the entrance so the surface doesn’t “skin” over, then hit it with peak heat in the middle for a full cure. This is how you stop those annoying bubbles and cracks from ruining your parts. The result? You get more pads out the door every hour and you actually get some of your floor space back. Just keep an eye on your conveyor speed—sync it with the IR intensity, or you’ll end up scorching your pads.
