
Getting Your IR Emitters Right for Brake Pad Curing
Here’s the thing about curing brake pads: you can’t just treat every material the same. If you try to use the same lamp setup for both ceramic and semi-metallic pads, you’re going to have a bad time. You’ll either end up with a core that’s barely cured or a surface that’s completely scorched.
Why the material actually matters
It all comes down to how the material handles heat. Semi-metallic pads are packed with copper and steel fibers. Because of that, they tend to bounce a lot of the IR spectrum right back. Ceramic pads are a different story. They soak up heat differently and usually need that heat to sink deeper into the part to make sure the resin cures all the way through. To fix this, we match the emitter’s wavelength to what the material actually wants. For those semi-metallics, we usually lean toward short-wave IR to punch through that metallic matrix. For ceramics? Medium-wave is usually the way to go. It drives the heat into the bulk of the material without burning the face.
Picking the right lamp
When we’re spec-ing these out, we’re looking at two things: power density and wavelength. High-wattage quartz halogen tubes are great because they ramp up instantly. That’s how you get those fast cycle times. But a word of caution—check your power supply. A high-density array pulls a massive amount of current. If your wiring and breakers aren’t up to the task, you’re going to have problems. We also offer coated quartz options. These narrow the emission spectrum, which means the energy actually hits the material instead of just heating up the oven walls. It’s much more efficient.
The reality of the shop floor
It’s tempting to just crank up the power to speed things up, but there’s a catch. If you go too hot, you risk “skinning.” That’s when the surface cures way too fast and traps gases inside the pad. Not ideal. You have to find that sweet spot between the lamp’s wattage and how fast your conveyor is moving. And if you do decide to push the wattage to save time, make sure your cooling system can handle it. Otherwise, you’ll just burn out the ends of your lamps.
