
Stop the Squeal: Why Your Curing Process is the Real Culprit
Ever wonder why some brake pads just won’t stop squealing? Most people blame the material, but the problem usually starts way back in the curing oven. When pads cure unevenly, you end up with these weird internal stresses and density gaps. It’s basically a recipe for vibration. If you’re using a standard convection oven, you’re mostly just heating the outside. The core stays under-cured, the pad warps, and your customer hears that annoying high-pitched scream every time they hit the brakes. We fix this with shortwave infrared (SWIR) emitters. Getting the heat where it actually matters Here’s the thing: convection is just heating air. SWIR is different. It uses radiation to send photons straight into the friction material. Think of it as volumetric heating. We tune these emitters to hit the exact absorption bands of your resins. Instead of just cooking the “skin” of the pad, the heat hits the core and the surface at the same time. No warping. No internal stress. Just a solid, quiet pad. The balancing act To make this work, you need some real muscle. We use high-wattage quartz halogen tubes because you need enough “push” (or flux) to get through those dense metallic and ceramic fibers. But you can’t just crank it to eleven and walk away. If you blast the wattage without timing your conveyor speed just right, you’ll scorch the binder. It’s a bit of a dance. Your control system has to be dialed in to the specific mass of the pads you’re running. Keeping things running We know that when a tube goes out, every second of downtime hurts. That’s why we use standard R7s or SK15 connectors. Your maintenance team can swap a burnt-out tube in a few minutes. No rewiring the whole bank, no headache. One heads-up, though: quartz is tough with heat, but it’s fragile. And brake dust is everywhere. If that dust coats your tubes, it messes with the emission spectrum and your efficiency tanks. We always suggest throwing on some protective quartz shields. It keeps the tubes clean and keeps your curing consistent. Simple as that.
