
Stopping That Annoying Brake Squeal
Ever wonder why some brakes just won’t stop screaming? It usually comes down to how the friction material was cured. If the outside of the part bakes faster than the inside, you end up with a mess of internal stress and patchy density. That imbalance is exactly what causes those vibrations and that high-pitched squeal when you hit the pedal. The problem is that standard ovens just blow hot air around. They heat things from the outside in, which is basically just baking a cake that’s burnt on the edges and raw in the middle. Getting the heat where it matters We handle this with shortwave infrared (IR) emitters. Instead of relying on hot air, these send energy straight into the molecular structure of the composite. It’s a different kind of heat. It hits the core and the surface at the same time. Because everything cures at the same rate, you get a consistent, solid part from top to bottom. No more guesswork. The gear and the a few warnings To get enough punch, we use high-wattage quartz emitters. These tubes pack a lot of energy, which is great because it lets you slash your cycle times. You get the parts out the door faster. But you have to be careful with your controllers. IR is nearly instant. If your sensor is a bit slow to react, you can accidentally scorch the surface before the system even realizes it’s too hot. I always suggest using closed-loop PID control and fast-response thermocouples. It keeps things safe. Putting it to work on the floor The best part? These emitters are basically drop-in replacements for those old, tired heating elements you probably already have. We use reinforced quartz glass so they don’t snap when the temperature jumps around during a fast cycle. One quick tip: check your wiring. You need high-temperature leads here. If you use standard cabling, the heat near the emitter will melt the insulation and leave you with a dead line. Once you get the settings dialed in, the curing gradients just disappear. The root cause of the noise is gone, and you’ll notice a lot fewer parts ending up in the scrap bin.
